The area was explored and settled by timber-cutters from 1863 when the area began to develop as a centre for Cooroy’s timber industry. The settlement had two operating sawmills and later diversified into dairying and fruit growing. The Cororoy Butter Factory opened for production in 1915.
In 1891 the Cooroy railway station was opened and in the same year, a post office opened. Various schools opened over time including Cooroy State School (1909) and Cooroy West State School (1911 – 1962). In 1961 a secondary department was added to Cooroy State School. Cooroy State High School was opened as a separate school in 1963 and became Noosa District State High School in 1967. In 2007 Cooroora Secondary College in Pomona was merged into Noosa District State High School. Noosa Christian College opening in 2003 as a primary school till 2007 when it expanded to include secondary classes.
In 1994 the town was cut through by the old Bruce Highway until the motorway bypass was built in 1994. Cooroy has a hotel, golf club, bowls club, and RSL club. It is a small, vibrant town with cafes and restaurants as well as a good selection of shops and accommodation options. Nearby Lake MacDonald has the Noosa Botanical Gardens and several of the Noosa Trails are accessible from Cooroy. The town also has an RV friendly policy and provides RV parking close to the town centre.
